Welcome Welcome & Happy Holidays!
Today I write to you about the Holiday (Christmas) themed adventure for D&D 5E from the DMsGuild, In the Black MidWinter. This 4.5 star platinum best seller costs only $2.99 - a decent price for a single holiday themed session of fun.
I know that this post is far earlier than what you would expect for a holiday themed blog post, but I wanted to post it early enough that anyone interested in running the adventure could get it, prepare it, and (as many TTRPG players know is the most difficult part of most games) schedule it.
I ran this adventure for my party back in 2017, and honestly we had a blast. We were all completely new to the TTRPG space (having just started the 5E Starter set in October of that year as all of our first experience in this realm). Rather than take our existing characters and put them into this holiday themed non-canon one shot we decided to create holiday themed characters that made the game even goofier and more fun. One of these characters (and a favourite of the group) was Hans Gruber from Die Hard.
As the adventure says, silly hats are definitely recommended.
It is definitely setup to be a challenging adventure, with the players starting with several levels of exhaustion right out the gate (I think I did away with this element for our game). If your party is up for a challenge, and don't mind possibly dying, this could be an excellent adventure for a holiday themed break for your regularly scheduled campaign. The references (the big one that comes to my mind is the house inspired by Home Alone) are also excellent and will give your players a kick of joy.
The adventure also comes with a custom magic item called "The Deck of Merry Things", which as you might've guessed is a Christmas inspired twist on the classic Deck of Many Things. There are pages that can be printed and cut out to create an actual physical deck for this as well (and the art here alone is worth the $2.99 in my opinion - I still have my copy I printed out years ago).
